Engineer – Radioactive Waste Management

3-year 'specified-purpose' fixed-term contract

Core mission
The Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL), situated in Grenoble, France, is Europe's leading research facility for fundamental research using neutrons. The ILL operates the brightest neutron source in the world and hosts over 2000 visits by scientists per year, who come to carry out world-class research.
The Radioactive Waste Management Group (GTDA), comprising a Head of Group, an engineer and five technicians, is responsible for the collection, treatment and conditioning of the nuclear waste produced on the ILL site, as well as for characterising waste packages and managing documentation relating to authorisations for the use of waste disposal sites. Reporting to the Head of the GTDA group, which is part of the ILL’s Health Physics, Safety and Environment Service (SRSE), you will work closely with the engineer in the group responsible for updating authorisation documentation.

Your tasks
  • Preparing documentation for waste acceptance requests to be submitted to ANDRA, CYCLIFE and CEA facilities to ensure compliance with certain contracts and removal of waste packages
  • Drafting the technical documentation and specifications required for the removal of waste packages, as well as obtaining and updating authorisations necessary for various waste disposal routes
  • Helping to manage the waste management process: identification of waste disposal routes, application of the Integrated Management System (IMS)
  • Drafting technical specifications in order to subcontract waste conditioning and disposal operations, as well as supporting the Radioactive Waste Management Group in coordinating work by subcontractors.
  • Implementation of ILL’s new waste disposal route of melting at Centraco (making initial contact, preparing operational documentation, etc.).
The waste to be managed includes the following (non-exhaustive list): solid waste from the experimental areas (VLLW), from the reactor (LLW–ILW or HLW) and liquid waste (LLW).

Your profile
  • Level 7 qualification (Master’s degree or equivalent) in nuclear engineering, plus at least one year of initial professional experience in a similar post
  • You must be independent, methodical and meticulous in your work, with strong team player skills
  • Excellent writing skills in French
  • Knowledge of Basic Nuclear Installations (INB - Installation Nucléaire de Base) and the INB ministerial decree (arrêté INB)
  • Expertise in nuclear metrology is desirable
  • An intermediate level of English is recommended.
