Research Scientist (F/M) - LARGE SCALE MAGNETIC STRUCTURES (D33) –
The LSS group comprises a range of instruments designed to carry out studies on the structure of matter on a scale of fractions of to thousands of nanometers. The range of science covered is broad, covering polymer and colloid science, structural biology, materials science and magnetism. Magnetic structure investigations take represent a significant percentage of scientific activities on our instruments and we strive to ensure technical and scientific leadership of our instruments dedicated to the study of nano-magnetism. Working within the LSS group in the field of polarized neutron reflectometry or small angle neutron scattering, while carrying out your own active research programme on magnetic structures in bulk systems you will be in charge of:
co-operating the small angle scattering instrument D33, participating both in the day-to-day operation of the instrument as well as its technical development and upgrades,
providing support to users for scientific experiments in materials science and magnetism and offering guidance with experimental design and data analysis,
promoting scientific partnerships in large scale magnetic structures science areas by ensuring the technical and scientific leadership of D33 in magnetism studies by SANS,
participating in the longer term development of instrumentation, sample environment and data analysis.,
conducting an independent research programme in magnetism or materials science and contributing to the scientific environment at the ILL.
D33 is a state-of-the-art high flux, monochromatic and time-of-flight (TOF) small angle scattering instrument. It has a polarized neutron option with 3He analysis and is optimized for the study of magnetic nanostructures and superconductivity as well as soft matter systems requiring TOF-SANS.
Qualifications and experience:
The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. in physics or a related subject completed with at least one period of successful postdoctoral or equivalent research and experience in neutron or x-ray scattering on magnetic systems.
We are particularly interested in highly motivated candidates with strong track record in large scale magnetic structures research and proven experience with instrumentation, aspects of polarized neutron scattering, time-of-flight methods, and data reduction frameworks. Proven dynamism in implementation of new methods and technical features on neutron instruments, good programming skills and a general interest in software development will be an asset.
The post represents an excellent opportunity for mid-career researchers to broaden their experience and interact with leading scientists from around the world. Applications from more experienced scientists able to obtain a secondment period from their home institution will also be considered.
As an international research centre, we are particularly keen to ensure that we also attract applicants from outside France. You must have a sound knowledge of English and be willing to learn French (a language course will be paid for by the ILL). Knowledge of German would be an advantage.
Medical fitness for work under ionising radiation is required.
